Without warning her husband, Anna unexpectedly arrived at the cabin. But as soon as she entered the house, she felt like she was about to faint from what she saw….

Anna sat in the train station cafe, stirring her cooling coffee with a spoon. The woman absentmindedly watched the people around her. They were all either newly arrived in this city or preparing to leave.

Passengers. Probably, they thought the same about Anna. A young woman sitting at the table, waiting for her train.

But that wasn’t the case at all. Max had driven Anna to the station, kissed her goodbye, and offered to wait with her for the train. «No, don’t,» his wife smiled at him, «then Matthew will be late for school.»

Max nodded, hugged his wife goodbye once more, and drove off. He left fully convinced that his wife was heading out on a business trip this sunny October morning. Her first one ever.

Anna was an elementary school teacher. The job was responsible, challenging, but very rewarding. It was her parents who suggested to Anna, after she finished high school, to choose teaching as her profession.

«You get along great with kids,» her mom assured her, «teaching is your calling.» «A wonderful profession,» her dad echoed, «noble, necessary, perfect for a woman.» So Anna agreed, and she never regretted it afterward.

The girl’s childhood was spent in a small suburban town. An urban-type settlement with narrow dusty streets, yards overgrown with greenery, where everyone knew each other. As a child, she was quiet and obedient.

It was a bit scary for such a girl to break away from her family and go to the state capital for studies. To a big and noisy city, as it seemed to Anna back then. But in their Maplewood, there was simply nowhere for her to enroll after school.

Out of all options, only the construction technical college. And that direction didn’t suit Anna at all. Anna sighed, remembering her parents.

Her father was no longer alive. The not-yet-old man was taken by a heart attack a few years ago. At least he got to see his grandson.

How Anna got through that year, she didn’t understand herself. Everything happened so swiftly. Her mom was constantly ill too.

Either high blood pressure or heart issues. It was worrisome for her. The only comfort was that next door to her mother lived the family of Frederick, Anna’s older brother.

They looked after her mother, didn’t let her get bored or down. Mom helped her brother and his wife with the grandkids too. And Matthew often visited his grandma.

He liked it there. Anna’s attention was suddenly drawn to a family. A young attractive woman, a guy with a one-year-old baby in his arms.

Something about this trio reminded Anna of themselves—her, Max, and Matthew. They had been just like that not long ago. Happy, carefree, content with life.

From the outside…

From the outside, everything remained the same. But only Anna knew what was going on in her soul. Anna loved Max.

It was probably love at first sight. Well, maybe not love right away, but at least strong attraction. Seeing Max for the first time, Anna felt drawn to this person she didn’t know at all.

And the guy didn’t disappoint. After getting to know him, the girl realized that Max was simply amazing. Sensitive, caring, attentive, kind, and endlessly talented.

Anna trusted him. Always trusted him. She believed in Max more than in herself.

And he never let her down. Not once. Well, at least that’s what Anna thought until recently.

When did everything change? Where did they take a wrong turn? It’s hard to say now. It happened unnoticed, gradually, day by day. In the whirlwind of endless tasks and cares, Anna didn’t notice the changes right away.

Business trips. It all started with them. Or no, even earlier.

The work trips became more frequent later. First, Max became somewhat absent-minded. Anna saw that something was occupying his thoughts.

Something apparently very interesting, even inspiring. Max often pondered something. A mysterious smile played on his lips at those times.

Well, who pays attention to such details after eight years of marriage? Everyday worries, routine—it all dulls vigilance somehow. Max remained the same loving and caring husband and father. He walked a lot with Matthew, didn’t shy away from household chores, worked.

It was Max’s salary that made up the bulk of their family budget. He was the breadwinner, the protector, the reliable wall. Anna was used to this, as her husband had shown himself responsible and decisive from the beginning.

You wouldn’t perish with such a man. Anna knew that Max loved her, still loved her. Sometimes he looked at her in a way that warmed her heart immediately.

And he constantly gave compliments, bought gifts, often without any occasion, and took care of her. Anna, of course, understood perfectly how lucky she was. She had seen enough of her friends’ and acquaintances’ husbands.

Many of these family men were somehow convinced that all household duties and chores should be carried by the wife. Some drank, some cheated, some methodically nagged their second halves. When women irritably shared about their spouses, Anna couldn’t even join such conversations and felt happy because of it.

Max, beloved, friend, wall, support, and hope. All at once. They shared everything with each other, absolutely everything.

And both were sure that the other half would understand, support, approve. Anna was used to living like that. She rightly believed that she had a share in such relationships.

Both she and Max were great. «But there are no such ideal husbands,» shook her head Veronica, Anna’s friend and colleague. They often spent breaks between lessons in the school cafeteria and discussed everything under the sun.

Veronica was an interesting person, erudite, cheerful, energetic woman. It was enjoyable to spend time with her. Only, her friend had long ago and forever become disillusioned with men…

Veronica had once had the love of her life. In her sophomore year, the girl lost her head over a guy she met right on the street. He approached her himself, showered her with compliments, invited her for a walk.

Just like in the old days, he saw a beautiful young lady and decided to start a relationship. And Veronica, always reasonable and cautious Veronica, agreed right away. This person stunned the still young girl with his assertiveness and confidence.

Veronica had a whirlwind romance. She was as if under hypnosis back then. She closed her eyes to many things…

To the fact that the guy was much older, and that he told almost nothing about himself. Veronica only knew that he came to their city temporarily from Los Angeles. This suitor swore eternal love to the young companion, made plans for the future.

In general, he knew how to hook an inexperienced girl. He created an image of a reliable and responsible person. He charmed with courtship, buried her in flowers and compliments.

Veronica was ready for anything for him. She even quarreled with her parents for the first time in her life. They wouldn’t let her stay overnight at a supposed friend’s.

Apparently, they suspected something. But the obedient daughter until then declared that she was already an adult. She slammed the door and ran to the object of her adoration.

Well, of course, the happiness was short-lived. The city beau vanished as suddenly as he appeared. He just disappeared from the radar, stopped answering calls.

For some time, Veronica worried. She thought something happened to him. She even cried.

Then she went to the hotel where this young man stayed. And learned that in the morning he calmly checked out, called a taxi to the airport, and left. Veronica understood everything then.

But she still hoped. Who knows what urgent circumstances he had. He would call, he would show up.

He knows where to find Veronica. Well, it couldn’t all be a lie. And his eyes full of adoration, and words about the future.

It doesn’t happen like that. Of course, the love of her life didn’t show up. Veronica suffered.

She didn’t want to eat or talk to anyone. The girl felt crushed, broken, betrayed. It seemed to her then that there would be nothing good in her life anymore.

And a couple of months later, Veronica realized she had more serious problems. She was pregnant. The news was a real shock to her.

And it even shook her up a bit, put her mind back in place. Brought her back to life in a way. After that, there was a serious talk with her parents.

They, of course, lectured their daughter, but supported her. So Veronica became a single mother. She lived with her mother and father.

They helped her raise her daughter. The whole family adored this girl. Alina turned out to be a real doll.

She took after her father in appearance, Veronica smiled, looking at her daughter. He was a handsome blond with emerald eyes too. At least thank him for that.

My daughter is growing up beautiful now. Anna knew Veronica’s story and understood why she was so negatively disposed toward all men in general. Now her friend thought that all were exactly like her daughter’s father.

Deceivers, womanizers, wastrels. And arguing with her was useless. «All cheat, absolutely all,» Veronica assured her friend.

«It’s in men’s nature, can’t help it.» «Well, I don’t know.» «Probably not all,» Anna argued with a smile.

«All,» her friend didn’t give up. «And those who don’t cheat just haven’t found someone yet.» «Well, I trust Max.»

«And you shouldn’t. I wouldn’t be so deluded about that. They’re all unreliable.»

Anna tried not to engage in such conversations with her friend, but sometimes it just happened. Anna pitied Veronica. She had bad luck in her youth, ran into a deceiver, and now this.

Nothing convinced her otherwise. Out of all men who ever existed, her friend acknowledged and loved only two—her own father and Matthew, Anna’s son, whose godmother she was. The rest she considered potential deceivers and cheaters.

Sometimes Veronica and Anna argued about Max. It happened. «Well, he can’t be that ideal,» Veronica shook her head…

«You probably just don’t notice a lot, or consider it normal.» «No. We both trust each other.»

«He’s my closest person. It happens, Nika, it does. Look at us.»

«Maybe it’ll help you reconsider your views. Maybe you’ll try meeting someone.» «Thanks, no need.»

«We’ve been there, we know.» Anna sighed. Veronica was an attractive young woman.

It was a shame that her friend was missing the chance to feel desired and loved. She even suggested seeing a psychologist. A specialist would help Nika work through the trauma from years ago.

But she flatly refused. Once, after a birthday party, they were returning home by taxi. And Veronica, who had exceeded her dose of alcohol at the celebration, suddenly opened up to Anna.

«After him, all other men seem gray to me. No one measures up to him, no one at all, can you imagine? He dumped me, deceived me, used me.»

«And I still consider him the ideal, what a fool, right?» After that conversation, much became clearer to Anna. Surprisingly, Veronica still had feelings for her daughter’s father. And Alina, so similar to him in appearance, didn’t let her mother forget him.

In general, it was Veronica who first suggested to Anna the version that Max had a mistress somewhere on the side. They were shopping together then, getting the kids ready for school. Both felt a bit sad that the long-awaited summer ended so quickly.

School would start soon, not only for Alina and Matthew but also for their teacher moms. Early rises, rushing, a whirlwind of urgent tasks. Max is going on another business trip, Anna shared the news with her friend.

«He’s been going too often lately,» she shook her head. «Their law firm expanded its geography,» Anna sighed. She didn’t like that Max was away from home so often now, but work is work.

«And are they paying more?» Anna pondered. Her friend’s question caught her off guard. «No, actually, they’re paying Max even less now.»

The woman shook her head negatively. Veronica perked up immediately. «Doesn’t that seem suspicious to you?» Her friend stopped and looked intently into Anna’s eyes.

«No. Should it?» «Well, how not? Constant business trips. Salary suddenly decreased for no reason.»

«It didn’t decrease that much. And the firm is expanding now, needs funds for development. Temporary difficulties.»

«That’s what Max tells you. And you believe him?» Anna nodded. Her friend’s reaction suddenly made her think that Max had indeed changed a lot lately.

His thoughtful gaze and the smile that sometimes appeared on his lips, and some secret calls, and texting someone. If you think about it, everything really looked like Max was hiding something from her. An episode suddenly flashed in her memory.

Anna enters the bedroom where Max is sitting at the laptop. At the sound of her steps, he abruptly closed the lid. Another moment.

Max’s phone rings, Anna picks it up to hand it to her husband, but he bursts into the room, hastily grabs the mobile from his wife’s hands, and answers the call behind a closed door. And the business trips. They had indeed become too frequent.

«I’d check his phone if I were you,» Veronica shook her head. «I’m very scared for you. Scared that you’ll experience the same pain as I did once.»

«It’ll be even worse for you. You’ve been together for so many years. And they, they’re all like that, men.»…

That conversation with Veronica was the trigger. That’s when a worm of doubt settled in Anna’s chest. Now she looked at Max with completely different eyes.

And she didn’t like this change in their relationship at all. But what to do, the previous trust was gone. Once her husband went to the bathroom, leaving his phone on the nightstand…

Lately, he hadn’t made such slips. He always carried the mobile everywhere, as if afraid to miss an important call. But here he suddenly forgot.

Anna didn’t struggle with doubts for long. Yes, taking someone else’s phone is wrong. But on the other hand, she had valid reasons.

Feeling almost like a criminal, the woman swiped her fingers across the screen. The phone was password-protected. What news.

It hadn’t been like that before, that’s for sure. So, it turns out, Max really had something to hide. Max behaved as if nothing happened.

Anna didn’t notice any coldness in their relationship from his side, no. He still hugged and kissed her before leaving for work. He still tried to take care of his wife.

Only the man was clearly very engrossed in something. Something or someone. Something fully occupied his thoughts.

Anna knew her husband well and saw it. Only the man wasn’t in a hurry to share secrets with his wife. But before, they always told each other everything.

Could it really be a mistress? This thought was sharp, unpleasant, hurtful. And somehow icy. When Anna thought about it, chills ran down her spine.

She didn’t want to believe that Max was doing this to her. Why would he? Everything between them had always been good. Why would he need a mistress? Maybe Veronica is right? Maybe men really can’t be faithful? Even the best of them.

Anna tried to drive the exhausting thoughts away. And when they started circling her again, the woman desperately came up with decent explanations for Max’s behavior. The firm is expanding, lots of work, that’s why business trips increased.

Her husband gets tired, so he became more silent. But he still loves her and Matthew. It’s visible, noticeable.

Only this thoughtful and almost enamored gaze of Max didn’t fit into the neat versions. After all, at that moment, he wasn’t looking at his wife. What’s the reason? Lawyer work never made the man so happy.

He went to law school only because his parents told him to. It turned out just like with Anna. His parents chose the profession for Max.

Because by the end of high school, he hadn’t decided what he wanted to be. Or rather, he had decided. But it was an unserious decision.

And the guy understood it perfectly himself. And Max turned out to be a good lawyer. He had a good way with words, and he thought quickly.

So the man succeeded in the profession. Max tried hard, very hard for the family. He did everything so that his wife and son lacked nothing.

Once Max had to make a tough choice. Anna remembered that moment. She greatly appreciated her husband for how he acted then.

She understood that Max had passed a kind of test. And one could say he even sacrificed his dream for her. And after that, after everything they went through, how could Max do this to her.

It was hard to believe he had a mistress. But all the facts pointed to it. And Veronica often added fuel to the fire with her talks about unfaithful men.

Still, Anna tried not to think about it. She stubbornly invented excuses for her husband one after another. But time didn’t make it easier.

Then again, Max’s texting with someone, or his smile, delays at work, endless business trips, Max was definitely hiding something. Once, it was around the end of September, Anna met Peter, an old friend and colleague of Max’s, at the mall. They worked in the same law firm, just in different departments.

«Hi, you look great,» Peter smiled, seeing his old acquaintance. «Hi. Long time no see.»

«How are things?» «All normal, as usual. Working, laboring,» — «Yeah, your work is over the roof now,» Anna shook her head. «You’re expanding, right?» The surprise that flashed on Peter’s face for a moment didn’t escape Anna’s attention.

Apparently, he hadn’t heard anything about any expansion. But the man quickly composed himself. «Expansion,» he said in a not too confident tone.

«Yes, expansion, lots of work.» The man beamed a smile at his interlocutor and tried to escape. But Anna didn’t intend to let him go just like that…

She already understood that her husband’s stories about changes in the firm were lies. Peter’s reaction was eloquent. «Wait, do you also go on business trips often now, like Max?» Peter froze in confusion, not knowing what to answer Anna without betraying his friend.

It was very noticeable. The man’s face reflected heavy thoughts. Then he nodded and, citing urgent matters, rushed off.

But his behavior told Anna a lot. Of course, there are no business trips. Max invents these trips to… to what? Spend time with a mistress? Anna started watching her husband more closely.

She didn’t like this new role of detective, but what to do? Anna needed proof. She had to be sure that Max was deceiving her before… before talking to her husband about such topics. Anna shared her worries with Veronica.

Who else? Not with her mother, who has a bad heart. And Anna had no other close people nearby. «Nothing surprising,» her friend shrugged.

«You’re not the first, not the last. Common thing. I told you that…» «Nika, not about that now.»

«I know all about your attitude toward men, believe me. I’m interested in something else. How do I get proof?» «Do you need them at all?» «I do,» Anna sighed.

It was hard for Veronica to explain that after so many years of happiness, it’s not easy to suddenly accuse Max of her suspicions head-on. What if she’s wrong? It would hurt Max a lot. And if there really is a mistress? Without proof, Max would wriggle out.

He’d come up with something. Make his wife doubt again. «Well, if you need proof so badly,» Veronica drawled thoughtfully, «if they’re absolutely necessary, I have one plan.»

«I think it should work.» «Go on, tell me,» Anna asked. And Veronica told her.

Yes, in the state Anna was in now, she probably wouldn’t have thought of it herself. You have to disappear from the city. Come up with something…

Say you need to go to your mother urgently or invent something else. But Max must be sure you’re not in the city and won’t be for a few days. The apartment.

The apartment will be at his full disposal, understand? And you? Set up a camera on the stairwell. They’re not expensive. And watch.

If a mistress exists, they’ll definitely take advantage of your absence. He’ll bring her home, for sure, when Matthew is at school. There, you’ll have your proof.

«Have you watched too many movies?» Anna smiled sadly. She still couldn’t believe she was seriously discussing such a crazy plan with her friend. Well, if you don’t like it, come up with something yourself.

Veronica got a bit offended. I’m trying to help you from the heart, and you? Don’t be offended. It’s just all so strange.

Okay, I have to go. Anna didn’t want to stay in her friend’s company anymore. Veronica, they always got along well and supported each other in tough moments.

But now… Now her friend’s glee irritated Anna. As if her whole demeanor said, «See, I was right, I told you.»

Perhaps Veronica was indeed glad. Not that her friend was in a tough situation, of course. The woman just got another confirmation of her viewpoint’s correctness.

All men are deceivers. Even the best cheat. Anna understood all this, but still, it was unpleasant to be around Veronica now…

At home, the woman calmly thought over her friend’s plan again and concluded that it was indeed a good way to get proof of Max’s infidelity. True, if during his wife’s absence he doesn’t bring anyone to their apartment, it won’t be evidence of his innocence. But if he does… Anna ordered a camera online.

She chose carefully. She needed equipment with good resolution and long recording without recharging. Had to spend money.

But what to do, necessary means necessary. Then she had to fiddle with installing the camera. Anna was used to all technical issues being entirely on Max’s shoulders.

But now… Now she couldn’t ask her husband to set up the camera. So she had to act herself. The internet didn’t fail.

After watching several tutorial videos, Anna managed the task that seemed unsolvable at first. All set. She could proceed to the next part of the plan.

Anna took time off work, and told Max she was being sent on a business trip. The boomerang returned. He lied to her about his business trips, and now the wife paid her husband back in the same coin.

«You on a business trip?» Max was surprised. «You’re an elementary school teacher, why a business trip?» «Professional development in Miami,» Anna shrugged. I don’t want to go myself, but the principal insists.

«Well, if needed, then needed,» Max smiled. «Probably you’re the most promising teacher there, since they’re sending you.» «I’m thinking, maybe take Matthew to mom or your parents for that time?» Anna assumed Max would eagerly grab the idea, as the apartment would be at his full disposal for several days.

«No, why make him miss school? We’ll manage, we’re not little,» Max smiled. «But you… You work so much lately.» «It’s okay, I’ll take a pause for a few days.»

Anna planned to spend her invented business trip at the family cabin. In silence, peace, and complete solitude. Where else could she go? Not rent a hotel.

So the cabin would come in handy, the purchase they had dreamed of with Max once. There were no plantations, long rows of potatoes, beds of cucumbers and tomatoes, or similar locations. It was a place for family rest and relaxation.

A few flower beds, unpretentious cherry trees, a cozy house. And a spacious area planted with lawn grass. They came to the cabin in summer to rest from civilization and be in silence.

Splash in the pool, sunbathe, grill barbecue. Enjoy summer, rest, each other’s company. And now the cabin would become Anna’s temporary refuge as she spied on her husband.

All so strange. The laptop, now constantly streaming the camera recording, Anna took with her, of course. What would she find out? Who would she see? Complete unknown, frightening and intriguing at the same time.

Max himself drove his wife to the station. Escorted her to the cafe, then went home to get Matthew to school on time. The man was convinced that his wife would board the train in half an hour, which would take her to Miami.

And Anna? She had completely different plans. First, she’d walk around the city. Yes, like that, alone, without hurrying anywhere.

Think everything over well, get her thoughts in order. Just walk. Walking always calmed her.

Then around noon, the woman would head to the bus station, from where buses left for their cabin community. For some reason, she really wanted to walk around the city, like that, alone, during work hours. First, Anna went to the waterfront.

The most beautiful place in their city. White railings, clean sidewalks, a wide leisurely river, on whose surface sunbeams played so beautifully, fresh air. So many memories were connected to this place for Anna.

After all, it was here that Max kissed her for the first time. Back then, young Anna almost had the ground slip from under her feet from surprise. She couldn’t imagine that Max liked her…

Anna didn’t notice his affection. She considered herself unworthy of such a guy’s attention. There were always many pretty girls around him.

What was she compared to them? Anna had been a lively girl, but in adolescence, everything changed. She suddenly grew tall, became thin and awkward. And pimples broke out on her face.

The girl couldn’t look at herself in the mirror. She got upset, even cried. She thought she was the ugliest in the class.

Classmates only reinforced this opinion. Boys paid no attention to Anna. And girls, not all, but some, made hurtful jokes about her.

The girl didn’t realize then that she wasn’t the only one going through this. In general, Anna became quiet, modest, insecure. But she always studied well and obeyed her parents…

Such a nice good girl. Time passed, teenage pimples disappeared. Anna turned into a very pretty young lady.

But she remained the same insecure girl. Quiet, modest, unnoticeable. And her friends were the same.

Anna remembered that period well. Admission ahead, moving to another city. Big, crowded, vibrant.

The upcoming changes scared Anna, used to cozy life under her parents’ wing. But the girl understood, no other way. Where to study here? Only the construction college, perhaps.

But Anna decided to be a teacher. Well, decided. It was her father and mother who suggested it.

And the girl wasn’t against it. Anyway, she had no own thoughts about the future yet. Teacher it is.

Anna still remembered how her parents first brought her to the city to show the apartment where she’d live during studies. Yes, she could get a dorm as a non-local. But her father decided a separate apartment was safer.

Dorm is parties. Our Anna won’t study there, the man reasoned. I can afford to rent an apartment for my only daughter.

And Anna’s life became completely different. Independent, saturated, sometimes difficult. She had to get used to everything, absolutely everything.

Get up to the alarm herself, cook breakfasts and dinners herself, get to university by bus, study in a new way. The abundance of changes initially plunged Anna into a depressed state. She so wanted to turn everything back, be mommy and daddy’s little girl again.

But there was no way back. And Anna understood it perfectly. The girl made new friends.

For example, Sophie. She came to the city from a village, but unlike Anna, only rejoiced at the sudden freedom. Sophie lived in the dorm, often skipped classes, and knew where in the city to have fun.

They bonded with Anna probably because both were newcomers. Sometimes Sophie stayed overnight at her new friend’s. It happened when she stayed too long in some company.

Sophie told Anna about her adventures, and she listened, hanging on every word. It was so fascinating. The liberated and free Sophie seemed to the girl like a heroine of an interesting youth series.

Sophie often invited Anna along, but the girl always refused. Either prepare for a test, or write a paper, and university isn’t school. Had to make efforts.

Studies were first for Anna. Sophie teased her good-naturedly about it. «You’re missing your best years,» her friend shook her head, eyeing Anna.

«Such a young beauty. And you sit over textbooks, withering in four walls. Come to the club with me.

But classes in the morning tomorrow. So what, it’s just history of pedagogy. Exam is far, can have fun»…

But Anna stood her ground. True, once after the session, Sophie finally persuaded the girl to go to the club. Anna herself had long wanted to visit such a place.

Her friend told about it so interestingly. And here… Session passed successfully. Deserved vacation ahead.

Why not? Sophie was delighted getting her friend’s consent. «Finally! I’ll introduce you to the world!» — she rejoiced. «But first, need to prepare.

You don’t have suitable clothes. But Sophie had suitable things.» She dragged Anna to her dorm and made her try on a bunch of outfits.

This was… This was not Anna’s style at all. Tight ripped jeans, crop tops, little dresses embroidered with rhinestones. Sophie admired Anna, but the girl felt out of place.

«Ah, you understand nothing!» — Sophie sighed when Anna rejected another image idea. «Okay. Go in what you want.»

And Anna went. In her usual jeans and t-shirt. Hair in a high ponytail.

True, at Sophie’s insistence, she did makeup. And wore her friend’s earrings. Huge gypsy hoops.

Anna regretted just a couple hours later that she didn’t dress brighter, more effectively. Maybe then he would have noticed her. Sophie brought Anna to the club.

She confidently, almost proprietorially, passed the security, then proceeded to the spacious hall. Anna immediately understood. Her friend was a regular here.

Indeed, people kept approaching Sophie to greet her. Guys, girls. They exchanged a few words, smiled at each other.

Sophie felt like a fish in water. But Anna was a bit embarrassed in the unfamiliar setting. Though she clearly liked it here.

Thumping upbeat music, people moving in rhythm on the dance floor. All kinds here. Girls and guys of various ages, bright and unremarkable, extravagant and stylish.

Something to look at. Anna froze for a moment, eyeing the colorful crowd. It was interesting.

But Sophie was already pulling her further. — «What are you standing for? Come on, they’re waiting.» Her friend led Anna up a narrow staircase.

They ended up on a platform overhanging the dance floor. The platform was filled with tables with cozy sofas and chairs. The dance floor was visible like the palm of your hand.

From one table, Sophie’s friends were already waving hello. They looked very flashy. Guys in skinny jeans and leather jackets.

Girls looked more ordinary against them. Anna was surprised at first, then noticed guitars leaning against the chair back. — All clear.

These were Sophie’s friends. Young guys who recently formed a rock band. Her friend had told about them.

Apparently very talented. They compose music and lyrics themselves. The girls sat at the table with Sophie’s pals.

— «This is my friend Anna, I told you about her.» Trying to shout over the music, Sophie announced. For a moment, all attention focused on Anna.

The girl habitually got embarrassed. — «Hi, nice to meet you.» It reached her.

The girl smiled and nodded. Then the conversation flowed its course. Attention shifted from Anna to one of the guys.

The girl relaxed a bit. She liked it here. She scolded herself for excessive shyness and tried, tried hard to behave as relaxed and free as the others.

The talk was about the guys performing soon, but the lead singer wasn’t there yet. Everyone jokingly scolded some Max. And then, then Max finally appeared.

A guy with slightly tousled dark hair appeared suddenly. He wore faded jeans and a baggy t-shirt. The young man’s style clearly differed from his friends’ images…

And he was different in general. Special. Cheerful gaze with a sly squint.

Charming smile. They had just been scolding him, but seeing the latecomer, they all smiled. — «Finally!» — one guy grumbled for show.

«Our turn in literally fifteen minutes.» — «You know I never let down!» — Max clapped him on the shoulder. Then he noticed the unfamiliar girl, Anna.

And beamed a smile at her. From it, two dimples appeared on his cheeks, finally captivating Anna. She realized she was done for at that moment.

— «We have a beautiful stranger among us,» Max noted. — «This is Anna, my friend. I told about her.»

Sophie immediately introduced her friend. And Max, he gallantly, very gently and carefully took Anna’s hand and kissed it. It was clearly a joking gesture.

Someone even laughed. Max apparently was known in this company as a joker and leader. But for Anna, this kiss meant a lot.

From Max’s touch to her hand, her head spun and the ground almost slipped away. Anna was still in light shock when the musician guys suddenly grabbed their guitars and ran down the stairs. — «All okay?» — Sophie smiled at the dazed Anna…

— «Did Max make such an impression on you?» The girl didn’t deny and nodded affirmatively. — «Happens. He’s charismatic like that.»

Then on stage performed the band «Fairway,» whose leader was Max. The guys gave their all, the crowd accepted them with cheers. These were real stars, even if local for now.

To Anna, their performance was no worse than concerts shown on TV. Most likely, this group awaited a big future. Upbeat music, lyrics full of meaning, the guys sang about love, friendship, injustice.

Each word resonated in Anna’s heart. And not only hers, judging by the audience’s reaction. The crowd in front of the stage sang along, danced, had fun.

The guys knew how to hold the audience. Anna’s attention was mainly on Max. He was so simultaneously brutal and tender, strong and energetic.

Sometimes the guy smiled, but his eyes remained serious. Anna watched him from her seat, without looking away. — «Cool guys.

I met them long ago, when I went to a disco at their university. By the way, they all study at law school. Future lawyers.»

— «Got it.» — was all Anna could say. Something inexplicable was happening to her.

Never had another person made such an impression on her. But here the girl watched Max without looking away. And he attracted her more and more, like a magnet.

She didn’t even notice the others. The guys performed a few more songs and returned to the table. The evening flowed on.

Max chatted with friends, joked with girls. He hardly paid attention to Anna anymore. Heated from the performance and success, slightly tousled, he emanated some special energy.

And how other girls looked at him. From time to time, one would come up to invite Max to dance or chat. These were very beautiful young ladies.

Long-legged, slim, bright, and very confident. Anna immediately understood she had no chance with Max. He’s a local star, so many fans.

Anna is a gray mouse against them. Should have listened to Sophie and worn something more attractive. Sitting here in jeans and t-shirt, like some invisible.

Max then somehow unnoticed vanished. Left with someone to party further. The evening immediately lost all charm for Anna.

She called a taxi and went home, leaving Sophie with her friends. Since then, Anna often thought of Max. Recalled his eyes, smile, and that light kiss at meeting.

How the girl wanted this person to touch her again. Anna carefully hid her feelings from Sophie. But she, of course, noticed and understood everything…

She was sensitive and insightful. Sophie now purposely invited Anna to the club if meeting Max and his company. And somehow unnoticed, the girl became one of them.

She and Max often talked, discussed movies or news. The guy turned out very thoughtful and deep. And also? Also, their views coincided on many issues.

Anna loved being near Max, looking into his eyes, talking to him. Sometimes he friendly put his arm around her shoulders, making Anna’s heart melt like ice cream in the sun. But Max was surrounded everywhere by beautiful nymph-fans.

Sometimes he looked at one of them so that Anna was ready to run from the bar or club without looking back from jealousy and despair. How she wanted Max to look at her with the same admiration. — «Max is a heartbreaker,» Sophie once said about him.

«And no wonder. Girls throw themselves at him.» — «Does he have… Is he dating someone?» — «No, nothing serious.

He’s too busy with music, the band, studies. No time for serious relationships, that’s for sure.» Her friend’s words pleased Anna.

But on the other hand, what did it matter to her that Max’s heart was free for now? Anyway, this guy would never look at her like at those beauties. He sees her only as a pal, good conversationalist, girl from the company. Well, it’s still better than nothing.

And yet Anna died of jealousy and envy every time Max paid attention to one of his many fans. The girl had never noticed aggression in herself before. But she wanted to grab the next such beauty by the hair and throw her down the stairs, preferably with kicks.

Only Sophie seemed to notice this. — «Dim the eyes, Fury,» she whispered smiling into her friend’s ear sometimes. — «Anyway, Max doesn’t need her.

He doesn’t need anyone now. It’s just fleeting infatuation for inspiration.» Sophie.

She was very attentive and wise beyond her years. Noticed everything, always drew right conclusions. Anna fully trusted her opinion.

Pity their paths diverged after university. Bright Sophie left to seek happiness in Los Angeles. At first, friends texted sometimes, then it quieted.

It happens. About a year passed since Anna met Max. They became good friends, and the girl’s life changed a lot.

Before, Anna’s days were filled only with studies, but now… Now it turned out with proper organization, one could successfully combine education and fun. Anna discovered a whole world, new acquaintances, communication with interesting people, and first love. Yes.

Anna was already 20, but she fell in love for the first time. Before, she liked school boys, but it was nothing like what she felt for Max now. And even if feelings were unrequited, they still enriched Anna, inspired, filled with special energy, and strangely made her stronger.

Anna dreamed, now she often dreamed of Max hugging her, confessing love. It was all so unreal and fabulously beautiful. Max studied, rehearsed a lot, performed with his band at various city venues.

Fairway was becoming more popular, guys were invited to corporate events and birthdays, their earnings grew. The band started in a garage of one participant’s father was gaining fame, and Anna understood why perfectly. All these guys were talented and sincere, their songs had deep meaning and touched fine strings in listeners’ souls, and catchy melodies made move to the beat.

Fairway members were sincerely in love with their craft, hence the success. Max, the recognized leader, once attended music school long ago. He told so amusingly how he hated that place.

Boring lessons of solfeggio and music literature, no choice of pieces, strict hostile teachers, exams, constant practices—all that almost killed the talented boy’s desire for music. Fortunately, grandma influenced Max’s parents, and they let him quit music school. And then, then Max did what he really liked.

Started composing lyrics and music himself. First listeners were neighborhood kids. They appreciated the music.

A couple times Max even performed at a local cafe. His first minute of fame was before truckers eating barbecue. They accepted him with cheers, applauded long, asked to play more.

It inspired the young musician. And then? Then he finished school, and parents suggested son apply to law in the city. Max was a smart guy…

Studies always came easy to him. But the young musician had no particular professional preferences. He’d like to become a famous guitarist or singer, found a band, make millions.

But Max understood perfectly—it was just dreams. Chances of them coming true were slim. Here in his suburban town, he’s a rising star.

But in the city—probably tons like him. Competition so high, no point hoping. In the city, Max met like-minded people, guys who like him loved music.

And most importantly—knew how to create it. So the band «Fairway» appeared. The guys decided to try, what did they have to lose? And initially, friends just wanted to have fun.

Rehearsed in a father’s garage of one Fairway member. Then performed at a holiday event at their law school. Among listeners was accidentally a local bar owner.

He invited the guys to play at his place in the evening, for money, even if small. And off it went.

Guys wrote new songs and performed in clubs and bars. They gained fame. Made their own website, regularly posting new compositions.

Songs were often downloaded. «Fairway» was known far beyond the city. A couple times even invited to capital clubs.

And then «Fairway» had real tours. What started as entertainment became something more serious and impressive. It inspired and encouraged the guys.

Anna sincerely rejoiced for them. But at the same time, the band’s growing popularity meant Max turning into an idol for young beauties. Someday one would steal his heart.

And who knows, maybe that girl would be against their warm friendly chats. Friendship would end. Thinking about it was very hard.

It was a warm May evening. Exams behind, admission to session in pocket, finals still far. Anna had plenty of time to have fun and rest a bit.

The girl decided to go to the club with Sophie. Especially since «Fairway» was performing there today. The guys weren’t at the club yet…

They usually arrived right before going on stage. Performed their repertoire, then relaxed. Anna eagerly awaited their appearance.

See Max again, talk to him again, sit close—such happiness. All evening a tipsy man about thirty stuck to Anna. Stared at her, made sleazy compliments, even tried to hug.

Such unobtrusive and very unpleasant admirer. The girl tried to stay away from him. But he found her each time and started talking.

Boasted he just returned from a business trip, now has lots of money. Apparently, this fact should impress Anna. Assured he’d never seen such a beautiful girl.

Offered to walk, have a nice time. Seemingly the man did nothing bad, but his persistence was a bit scary even. Anna went up to her friends and shared her problem with Sophie.

She just laughed. «There, another broken heart on your count. You’re a fatal woman after all.

I’d say, even deadly.» But Anna wasn’t in the mood for jokes. Because of the intrusive suitor, she didn’t even dare go closer to the stage to watch the performing Fairway members now.

And then it turned out Max and his company wouldn’t stay at the club after performance today. They have tours again. Plane tomorrow morning, need to be in shape.

Work the evening and straight home. Anna got upset almost to tears. She hadn’t seen Max for over two weeks and missed his smile and eyes very much.

And now this. The girl even got a headache. Fairway performed the last song, musicians bowed and ran backstage…

That’s it. Now Anna won’t meet Max for a long time. «I have to go,» Anna sighed.

«Are you serious? The evening is just starting. Gally and Tanny are coming. It’ll be fun.

Stay.» Head hurts. Well, as you wish.

Anna called a taxi and went out to wait for the car on the porch. It was very late already. Muffled music came from the club.

On the porch, Anna was completely alone. And suddenly, the door swung open, and next to Anna was he. The same intrusive suitor who hadn’t given her peace all evening.

Now he was even more brazen. «Oh, my queen!» — the man grinned. He came very close to the girl, enveloping her in the smell of sweat and booze.

The unpleasant admirer clearly followed her, that’s why he was on the porch now. Anna felt anxiety. And when the man proprietorially put his arm around her waist, the girl got scared for real. This person had drunk a lot, but was strong, incredibly strong. He could do anything he wanted with her right now. And around, no one.

And calling for help was pointless, of course. — «Step back!» — Anna sharply pushed the man away. He shouldn’t see he scared her.

— «You’re feisty!» — the admirer smiled wider and moved toward Anna again. — «I like those.» Anna realized she needed to run.

She turned, dashed away, but the man caught up in an instant. She didn’t even reach the parking lot. Grabbed her arm firmly and decisively.

His eyes now burned with angry fire. — «Teased me all evening. Wagged your tail in front of me.

And now refusing? Won’t work.» The man dragged Anna to a car parked in the lot. Probably his.

Anna struggled, but her flailing didn’t affect the situation. Horror gripped her body. The thought of what could happen now made her sick.

And then a real miracle happened. Anna didn’t even understand at first what was going on. The man suddenly loosened his grip, and a moment later was on the ground.

A young guy in a black leather jacket twisted him. — «Anna!» — he exclaimed surprised, glancing at the girl. It was Alex, one of the Fairway members.

Not Max, of course, but still an amazing and lucky coincidence. Anna was ready to kiss her savior at that moment. The man grunted and writhed on the ground, pinned by Alex’s knee.

Coping with the sturdy guy wasn’t as easy as with the fragile girl. A few seconds later, others flew to the scene, including Max. So Anna saw him after all.

Even in such strange circumstances. The Fairway members were surprised recognizing Anna. We saw from the porch how this scumbag was dragging a girl to his car, but didn’t think it was you, Alex voiced the general opinion.

Now friends helped him hold Anna’s admirer. — «You okay?» — Max put his hand on her shoulder. The girl felt the warmth of his palm and smiled.

— «I’m just fine,» she admitted. And it was pure truth. Scared, probably.

— «A bit,» Anna nodded. And only then felt a large shiver starting to shake her. Probably, her mind was gradually realizing what disaster she just escaped.

And here her taxi arrived. — «That’s for me, I need to go home,» the girl stammered. And then Max hugged her tightly.

With his warm, reliable arms, he tried to stop her shivering. And it really calmed her. Anna pressed against him, inhaled his scent fully.

On the ground writhed the scoundrel who just wanted to drag her into his car. And she… She felt on cloud nine from happiness. — «You can’t be alone now,» Max shook his head…

Then turned to his friends. — «I’ll see her home.» — «What about this one?» — Alex asked, pointing at the man still lying in the dirt.

— «Leave him. He can’t stand anyway. Let him lie,» Max waved.

Then they rode in the taxi. Max held Anna in his strong embrace, stroked her back and shoulders, said something encouraging and soothing. He was so reliable, so dear.

The girl consciously enjoyed the wonderful moment. How she wanted this road to be long and endless. But the house where father rented Anna an apartment was quite close.

— «Do you really want to go home now?» — Max clarified when the car stopped at the needed entrance. Anna shook her head negatively. Home was the last place she wanted.

— «To the waterfront,» Max commanded the driver. Then turned to Anna. — «You don’t mind walking a bit? You shouldn’t be alone now.»

At that moment, Anna thanked fate for sending her that drunk admirer. After all, if not for him, Max wouldn’t have invited her to walk on the night waterfront. First, they silently strolled along the lantern-lit waterfront, holding hands like two lovers, smiling at each other from time to time.

It was a moment of amazing unity. Anna realized more clearly that Max was the closest and dearest person to her. The girl understood she would remember this walk.

Every second of it, for life. And then, then something completely unexpected happened. Max stopped, turned Anna by the shoulders to him and… «Can… can I kiss you?» — the guy asked, looking straight into his confused companion’s eyes.

He was so serious and clearly nervous, something Anna never noticed in Max. The girl thought she misheard. Just in case, Anna nodded affirmatively and… Max kissed her.

They stood embracing on the night waterfront and kissed under the lanterns. Silence and no one around. It was all too fantastic and unreal…

Then there was a long talk. Mostly Max spoke. Anna just listened.

Listened and smiled, unable to believe this was happening to her. «I’ve long realized you’re completely my person.» Max tenderly put his arm around Anna’s shoulders, pulled her to him.

«Nothing like this ever happened to me. At first, I just liked talking to you. Looked at you and thought, what a good girl.

Smart, sensitive, kind. Then suddenly realized. Realized I start missing you when I don’t see you for long.

That I lack you.» It was a revelation for Max. He, of course, dated girls from time to time.

He had romances, fleeting, bright, mostly beautiful. But none of these young creatures evoked in him as much feeling and emotion as Anna. A modest girl from the general company.

«Soon I looked at you with completely different eyes. You liked me more and more. I realized there are no others like you.

I know many girls, but they’re completely different. With you, it’s always so good, so easy. You’re completely special.»

From these confessions, Anna’s head spun. Is all this really happening to her? Max saying such words. They make you want to cry and laugh at once.

Anna didn’t know what to say in response. All words seemed not expressive enough. Instead, she pressed tighter to Max’s chest.

And he stroked her head like a kitten and smiled. Of course, he understood everything from her reaction. From that moment, they stopped being separate individuals and became one whole, a couple.

Yes, a couple. Anna felt exactly then that now they were together. Later, the girl confessed to Max that she fell in love at first sight.

And hid her feelings because she was sure their relationship had no prospects. — «Why?» — Max was sincerely surprised. — «Well, around you always so many friends, so many beautiful girls.

I thought I was a gray mouse against them.» — «And I… I didn’t see any signals from you,» Max smiled. — «I know what girls do when they like a guy.

Try to be near all the time, flirt, get embarrassed at least. But you behaved completely different. I couldn’t assume you liked me.

If I’d noticed anything. But I was afraid to ruin our friendship. We communicated so well and naturally.

Didn’t want to show my affection and risk those relations.» Not everything between Anna and Max was always smooth, of course. They got to know each other better, adjusted, learned to be together.

But overall, overall next to him Anna felt completely different. Loved, beautiful, protected. And she liked this feeling very much…

Max took care of her. His love expressed in care and patronage. They were almost peers, but he behaved as if much older.

Took responsibility, solved all important issues. Anna long couldn’t believe Max was really with her now. It was somehow incredible.

She dreamed of this for so long. Drew similar pictures in her head. But was sure it would never happen.

And here it is. But Sophie, as it turned out, anticipated such an outcome. I saw how Max looked at you.

Only thought maybe it seemed to me. But it was true. I’m happy for you.

— «Wonder why I didn’t notice anything?» — Anna wondered. — «You’re not very attentive to details in general,» Sophie smirked. And he hid his feelings carefully.

Not very attentive to details. These words of Sophie’s, said many years ago, suddenly clearly surfaced in Anna’s head now. Her friend was right after all.

Back then Anna noticed nothing. And now missed everything. The woman was just passing the city fountain.

Over there on that bench they spent lots of time with Max. Laughed, kissed. Enjoyed youth and each other’s company.

The world seemed bright, simple, warm then. Because they had each other. Max enthusiastically told about his plans for the band.

Music captivated him more and more. The young man’s eyes shone when he discussed his rock band’s prospects. It was his brainchild, with which the guy connected big hopes.

Anna was glad her beloved had such a thing that filled him with energy and moved him forward. Especially since Fairway was becoming an increasingly popular group in their city. Anna supported Max.

She thought he would really become a star. So talented, so passionate. The audience already accepts them.

Further more. New heights. Max wasn’t going to work as a lawyer.

He said many times it was too boring and routine for him. Anna agreed. Indeed, her beloved is a creative person.

He needs to develop as a rock musician. Conquer new peaks. Imagining the then Max in a white shirt and classic pants in an office was impossible.

And then? Then an event happened that changed everything a lot. It happened at the most seemingly inappropriate moment. Both Max and Anna were finishing their universities.

Diploma ahead, practice, state exams, job search. So much. And here? Here Max got a very interesting offer.

Such that one usually doesn’t refuse. Fateful, one could say. Videos of Fairway performances online were noticed by a famous producer from Los Angeles.

He himself found info about the band’s lead, somehow got his contacts. And one day just called Max. He didn’t understand at first what was happening.

Thought someone pranking or maybe scammers. And hard to believe such. Suddenly they call and say they want to create a new band with your participation.

And not somewhere, but in the capital. Moreover, overseeing it all would be a person whose name often flashes in the press. His proteges usually become top stars.

Thousands-strong halls across the country. Insane fees, tours. Big stage.

Max dreamed exactly of this. And deserved such fate. Anna knew it for sure.

She rejoiced when the young man told her the news. — «You’ve been going toward this so long. It’s just wonderful.

You’ll achieve success, I know for sure. Your songs, they’re special. You’re very talented and…» — «It’s all so,» Max smiled.

«But you know, they’re inviting only me. What about the guys? It’s thanks to them Fairway appeared. We did everything together, worked a lot, and now like this.

If I leave, the band will fall apart.» — «I understand,» Anna shook her head. Only now she realized the choice before Max was much harder than it seemed at first glance.

But you need to move forward. Think, if you become famous and influential, you’ll pull your guys up later, help them. Max nodded.

But it was visible he still doubted. Anna couldn’t let her beloved miss such a chance because of moral torments. And she turned to Alex, one of the permanent Fairway members.

He was an honest and sincere guy, friendly, no double bottom. Anna fully trusted him. The girl told Alex what was happening with Max.

He first was thrilled, then realizing Fairway’s end, sadly shook his head. But Alex did what Anna counted on. It was he who convinced Max he absolutely couldn’t refuse such an opportunity.

Max felt much easier after talking to the band. They unanimously urged the lead to accept the offer. These were real friends.

No hint of envy, not a single reproach. Anna understood that now she and Max would see each other less. He’d have to live and work in Los Angeles.

And she? Probably move to the capital closer to her beloved. Max said as soon as he can, he’ll definitely solve housing issues. If he said, means he’ll do…

But not right away. At first, he’ll live with other band members in a suburban house, rehearse from morning to evening, adjust to each other. It’ll be a hard period.

And quite long. The producer already warned Max about it. But the project promised to be very successful.

And this prospect became a guiding star for Max. He was ready to forget everything for a while and only work from dawn to dusk. Especially since it was his favorite thing—music.

Anna was happy for her beloved, but worried too. This is a real test for their relationship. They won’t see each other for some time.

And there, in Los Angeles, so many beautiful and talented girls. What if Max? He, of course, proved his feelings’ strength and fidelity many times during their relationship. He had fans here too.

And yet. Who knows. Anna tried to drive anxious thoughts away.

To Max, she only said she’d miss him a lot. He hugged her, assured he couldn’t imagine living without her either. Promised to stay in touch constantly…

The guy was already preparing for departure. Finished university matters. Negotiating early exams and diploma defense was hard.

But Max managed. Suitcases packed, even tickets in hand. And then this.

Anna didn’t even want to do a pregnancy test at first. So what, delay. It happens often to her.

But then one morning nausea rolled to her throat, Anna spent half an hour in the bathroom. She’d never been so sick in her life. Poisoning? But next morning it repeated. Here the girl understood. Can’t ignore such symptoms.

Anna immediately went to the pharmacy around the corner. Bought a test. And without delay, did it, locking in the bathroom.

Then, blinking confusedly, she stared long at two bold clear lines. Wow. First emotion was joy.

She and Max would have a baby. What happiness. Early, of course.

But no matter. They’ll manage. And then… Then Anna suddenly thought her beloved was flying to a new life next week.

He won’t be around. Won’t help with the child. What to do now? That same evening Anna and Max walked the evening city.

He held her hand and shared impressions of what was happening to him. Goosebumps. Feel like a hero of some movie about a star’s rise.

Max was in high spirits. In thoughts he already stood with guitar in spotlights on big stage. He had so many ideas, so many plans.

It was hard for Anna to confess to him what she learned in the morning. But she had to. Smile.

Happy smile. That’s the first thing Anna noticed when she told Max everything. He rejoiced.

A heavy stone immediately fell from the girl’s heart. Pregnancy. It came at the wrong time.

Yet Max was sincerely glad to learn he’d become a father. — «This is… this is just some miracle!» — he said, pressing Anna to him. — «How do you feel now?» — «Like usual.

Only nauseous in mornings, otherwise no changes.» Then they silently wandered the city streets, still holding hands. But each thought their own.

Anna carefully watched Max’s face. He was clearly making some important decision. — «Need to think over a lot,» Max finally said.

«Our child… it changes everything. The whole world will be different now. We’re parents now, understand? We must make our baby happy, protected, lacking nothing.»

Anna gazed at Max with pleasure. She didn’t feel anything like that yet. Just quietly rejoiced that a little dear person settled under her heart…

Max and Anna now lived together. He rented an apartment near the studio where Fairway rehearsed. Small one-room, cramped in an old house.

Together it was good and cozy here. But couldn’t bring a baby here, of course. No space even for a crib in the apartment.

At home they snacked, watched TV, went to bed. And in the morning over breakfast, Max told Anna his decision. So.

I’m not signing the contract with the producer. Staying here. We’ll wait for the child together, set up new life.

I must be by your side now. In the first instant, Anna felt a mountain lift from her shoulders. Max stays nearby.

And with him? With him nothing is scary. He’ll solve everything. Won’t have to cope with problems and difficulties alone.

But then? In a couple moments it dawned on Anna. What this decision means for her beloved? She mustn’t let Max give up his dream he went toward so long. No, — she shook her head.

No, no, don’t even think. I’ll manage. Live with parents for a while.

You can’t refuse this chance. No way. I’ll manage.

It’s about a short time. A year, two, three max. Then we’ll be together again.

You’ll fulfill your dream and… No. Max smiled and put his arm around Anna’s shoulders. I must be by your and our child’s side.

And not just must. I really want it. Miss such important moments in son or daughter’s life.

No way. What about your musician career? What about performances, fame? It’s all childishness. Max waved and tried to make his voice carefree.

But Anna knew he was really upset. The decision clearly was hard for him. Max sacrifices a lot for her and their baby.

Childishness? It’s your dream. Foolish to refuse such offer. I’ll manage, don’t even think.

Anna didn’t imagine yet how she’d manage completely alone. But Max shouldn’t guess. He needs to fly to Los Angeles.

Needs to break through to big stage. It’s his dream, his life. Still unknown if it’ll work out, the guy shook his head.

Success depends on many factors. Producer promises nothing, says need to try. Well, try. I don’t doubt you’ll succeed.

It’s a bird in the hand, Max smiled warmly at Anna. And we need money right now. Money and stability.

We must prepare properly for the child’s arrival. And I, I don’t want to miss the first days of his life. That’s something you can’t catch up later.

And Max stayed. Got a job at a law firm in his specialty after all. The person who couldn’t stand routine work rejoiced like a child when hired.

It’s a very promising company, Max told Anna. Good salary, growth opportunities. Just what a family man needs.

Anna smiled, of course, but her heart ached. Ached because Max made such a sacrifice for her. It was a test for their relationship.

And Max passed it worthily. And yet his place isn’t in a stuffy office. Fairway members called their lead back. Tried to revive the band…

But Max refused. Now he worked a lot, simply no time for rehearsals and performances. The guy’s life had completely different goals…

This stage is behind, passed, he explained to friends. A new turn started for me. All, now I’m adult.

Soon Max could rent a bigger apartment. Then a wedding without pomp and solemnity. Just sat with friends in a cafe and celebrated.

Money needed for other things. Baby stuff wasn’t cheap. Then Matthew was born.

And Max showed himself a wonderful father. Sensitive, attentive, caring. When the young parent held his son, his eyes shone with special light.

Anna saw. Her beloved is happy. It made her feel better.

The spouses went through a lot. Sleepless nights with the baby, lack of money, even relationship crisis. But coped.

Preserved warm feelings for each other. Both did a lot for their family to be strong and friendly now. Everything worked out well for them.

Bought an apartment, a car, even acquired a cabin, not to keep the child in the stuffy city all summer. To this very cabin Anna was heading now. She needed somewhere to spend time.

The woman sat on the bus taking her to the cabin plot, thoughtfully looking out the window. The sun shone bright from the sky, but fall had fully come into its rights. Yellowing trees, withered grass.

Air clean and transparent. Fields still dotted with flowers here and there. Anna never passed here at this time of year.

Everything familiar and yet somehow different. Strange this, not trusting Max. They’ve been together so many years.

He proved loyalty and devotion many times. What was that decision worth? Leave rock musician career, forget the dream. Max.

After all, since then he didn’t do music at all. When? Needed to earn money for the family. Only lately sometimes the man took the old guitar.

And even then only to teach his son simplest chords. Max is a wonderful father. Attentive and involved.

But his current behavior all points to Max having someone. And soon Anna will have proof. Probably.

Only what to do then? Anna didn’t know yet. The bus stopped at the needed stop. Anna got out.

It was quiet here now, unlike summer. In summer, kids on bikes everywhere. Conversations and laughter from behind fences.

But now as if extinct. Even eerie somehow. Anna moved along the street.

There among these stranger houses was their plot with Max. They rejoiced so when they could buy it. Lovingly arranged their nest.

Made it cozy and suitable for family rest. Rest exactly, not slavery on plantations. Both decided the cabin was needed only to pleasantly spend time in nature…

Their views almost always coincided. Anna opened the gate with a key and entered the yard. The house looked somehow abandoned and lonely.

The woman climbed the porch, pushed the door. Strangely, it was open. Did they forget to lock it in September when closing the cabin season? Strange.

Usually Max wasn’t so careless. But entering inside, Anna immediately understood. The house was quite inhabited.

Someone was here very recently. An ashtray on the table, cigarette still smoking in it. Chairs pushed back disorderly, someone’s hoodie on the bed.

Clearly stranger’s. And then a thought pierced Anna, making her even sweat. Of course.

How didn’t she guess right away? Why would Max bring a mistress to the apartment? Neighbors there, many witnesses. Obviously, he brought her to the cabin. The rooms were smoky.

Cigarette aroma mixed with sharp perfume scent. Fridge full of food. Seems the lady spends time here permanently.

That is, lives. At their cabin. The cabin bought for rest with the child.

What cynicism. But now no one was home. Silence stood.

All clear. Either went to the store or decided to walk the field or grove. Enjoy the fine fall day.

How romantic. Anna quickly walked into the big room. Here they usually lived as three when coming to the cabin…

The woman didn’t even recognize the room at first. Table pushed to the window. Center cleared.

For a drum set. On stage the instrument seems small, but actually takes much space. Two electric guitars on the bed by the window.

White and black with brown stripe on body. This one Anna recognized. It’s her husband’s guitar.

He hadn’t taken it out for long. Anna almost forgot how it looks. But once Max performed with it.

Strummed strings, sang his songs, immediately picked up by inspired viewers. Now seems like in another life. Anna looked around confused.

She didn’t expect to see this at all. She thought women’s things would be in the room, but this suddenly. Male voices from outside.

Someone returning to the house. Instant, and the room fills with people. Anna knows them all.

Alex, Elijah, Sam, and Max. Of course, Max. He has a big bag from the local store.

That’s where they went as a crowd. — «Ah, Anna?» Max couldn’t believe his eyes. — «What are you doing here? I drove you to the station myself this morning…»

— «What am I doing here?» — Anna echoed. — «Oh, it’s a very long and apparently stupid story. I’ll tell sometime later.

But first explain what’s going on here.» — «Let’s go smoke,» commanded the perceptive Alex. And immediately only Anna and Max left in the room.

They stood opposite each other and were silent. Max started first. He smiled a bit guiltily, pulled a chair for his wife, sat himself on the bed edge.

— «Well, what to say, my dream didn’t let me go after all.» Max took Anna’s hand. «Fairway» exists again.

And even… we even have very good prospects. It all started about three months ago. Max got a call from a person in Los Angeles.

Again a producer, only different this time, but no less famous and star. Turns out, he stumbled on Fairway performance videos online. And the guys’ creativity hooked him a lot.

All like back then. Almost. Unlike the first producer, this one liked the whole band.

He decided to learn the collective’s fate. Made inquiries. And to his dismay found out «Fairway» no longer exists.

But potential… This person saw big potential in the band and decided to try finding at least the lead. Max didn’t understand at first what they wanted. Then he had a deja vu feeling.

Again calling from Los Angeles and again with an offer impossible to refuse. The producer invited them to a show. First just to a show.

The idea was: not too popular musicians come to the studio, show their creativity. Then stars give them advice.

And songs start sounding completely new. Had to go to Los Angeles for rehearsals, recording performance. That’s why Max’s so-called business trips increased.

He explained absences with business trips. Show winners get a contract. Contract with a famous production center, understand? And that’s guaranteed success.

And we, we’re in the finals already. Everything points to us becoming winners. But even if not, we’ve been noticed.

Showed ourselves, attracted right people’s attention. Already getting contract offers. Max even had to quit his job after it became clear everything getting very serious.

The others did the same. They already got paid for show participation, so their families noticed no financial changes. We decided, decided for now to tell nothing to anyone, Max continued.

At first seemed all nonsense. No need for extra talk. But then, then we decided just to surprise.

Stun our own, inspire, make a sensation. The show airs soon. Hope we become winners after all.

Wanted to immediately delight loved ones with first place, victory, and generally tell about changes when there’s some certainty. Anna looked at her husband and smiled. Her own suspicions now seemed stupidity to her.
