During an appearance on “Meet the Press” with NBC’s Kristen Welker on Sunday, February 2, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem skillfully and engagingly countered Welker’s assertions regarding a supposed “fear” of deportation among legal immigrants.
To provide context, President Donald Trump campaigned on a promise to adopt a much stricter stance against illegal immigration. He has begun to fulfill that commitment, with Border Czar Tom Homan urging ICE to conduct mass arrests and deportations of criminal illegal immigrants. Welker leveraged that anti-illegal immigration campaign to inquire whether legal migrants should be concerned about the possibility of being “wrongfully detained.”
In response, Noem flipped the narrative and informed her that the only reason legal immigrants might harbor such concerns, if they do, is due to misinformation propagated by the media. She stated, “I would assert that if I’ve heard that expressed by individuals who are legal citizens of the United States, it’s because the media has fostered that fear. The media has suggested that this is a possibility.”
Furthermore, Noem emphasized that the Trump Administration has provided no indication that such deportations are imminent, asserting, “There’s nothing from this administration, from President Trump or from any of the law enforcement officials in these communities that has suggested they need to be anxious about that at all.”
Noem then dismissed Welker’s assertion by highlighting that this is what Americans voted for and that they largely view it positively. As she articulated: “The citizens of the United States are assured that finally, after four long years of having a president in the White House who disregarded federal law and jeopardized their communities, there is a different leader now. There is a leader who loves this country and is committed to making their communities safer. These citizens residing here are elated.”
Building on that, Noem remarked that even in the predominantly blue city of New York, residents expressed their appreciation for the immigration enforcement efforts and conveyed their gratitude to her and the officers for their actions. She stated, “In fact, during my visit to New York City earlier this week and in several other cities since then, individuals passing by us on the streets were expressing their thanks to our officers.”
Continuing on this theme, she highlighted that these residents were relieved to no longer live in fear of illegal immigration, stating, “They were expressing gratitude to these investigators and those who were apprehending these dangerous criminals for their presence, ensuring that they could escort their children to school with newfound confidence in their safety and that they could conduct business and reclaim their community.” Watch her here:
In a post on X regarding a related topic on Wednesday, February 5, DHS Secretary Noem asserted her refusal to apologize for deporting criminals, declaring, “I will make no apologies for diligently working to remove murderers, r*pists, child abusers, and gang members from this country. Indeed, these criminal aliens are DIRTBAGS.”
