A significant number of Iranians have been apprehended after their attempt to enter the United States via the Bahamas, as reported by a Republican member of Congress on Monday.
The announcement, made by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), follows Iran’s pledge for retaliation in light of the U.S. strikes on Sunday that severely damaged three nuclear enrichment sites. In her statement, the Florida Republican emphasized that the risk of “sleeper cell” attacks orchestrated by Iranian operatives is very real.
“Am I worried about sleeper cells? Absolutely. This is NOT a conspiracy theory; it represents a serious national security concern,” she conveyed to Florida’s Voice News.
It remains uncertain how many people were aboard the boat or whether their journey was a direct response to the attacks.
Nevertheless, critics of former President Joe Biden are already attributing the previous administration’s lax border security and asylum policies to the entry of over 1,200 Iranian nationals into the U.S. within four years.
“The probability of violent extremists within the Homeland independently resorting to violence in reaction to the conflict would likely rise if Iranian leadership were to issue a religious decree advocating for retaliatory violence against targets within the Homeland,” asserts a bulletin released by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on Monday.
“It is our responsibility to ensure the safety and awareness of the nation, particularly during periods of conflict,” the Department of Homeland Security stated in a communication to Fox News Digital. “The ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran heightens the potential threat to the homeland, manifesting as possible cyberattacks, violent acts, and antisemitic hate crimes.”
