I parked my van that evening at an RV campground nestled beside a quiet, glassy lake, fifty miles outside the city. The sunset painted the sky in streaks of violet and gold. I sat in my swivel chair, drinking a cup of chamomile tea, and finally turned my phone off airplane mode.

The notifications exploded like shrapnel.

Forty-two missed calls. A dozen voicemails. And a stream of text messages that perfectly encapsulated the dysfunctional hierarchy of my family.

First, from my father: “You selfish, ungrateful brat. We are at this filthy motel. Turn that van around and come pay for a better hotel right now.”

Then, a flurry from Chloe:

“Harper, what the hell did you do?!”

“Mom and Dad are crying in a Motel 6. Why did you rent your house out? You know they were supposed to stay with you!”

“You need to fix this. They keep calling me and I’m literally hosting a crypto networking mixer tonight. I can’t deal with their drama right now.”

I smiled, a dry, humorless expression, and typed my first and only response to my sister:

“They aren’t my drama, Chloe. They are your investors. Take care of your shareholders.”

I hit send and immediately blocked her number.

I listened to one voicemail from my mother. Her voice was thin and fragile, playing heavily on the guilt she had installed in me since childhood. “Harper… please. The mattress here is terrible. Your father’s back is aching. We just wanted to be together as a family. Why are you punishing us for believing in your sister?”
