MAGA Scores Major Regulatory Win as Key Democrat Throws in the Towel, Resigns

In a notable victory for President Trump, Willie Phillips, a Democratic commissioner on the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), submitted his resignation on April 22, 2025, prior to the conclusion of his term. This move will enable President Trump to appoint a Republican, potentially establishing a Republican majority on the crucial five-member panel.

For context, numerous critics highlighted Phillips’ excessive focus on environmental issues, which they argued adversely affected industry and the average American. Conversely, Mark Christie, the FERC chair appointed by Trump, intends to promote oil, gas, and pipeline initiatives.

In response, Mark Christie, the Republican FERC chair, remarked, “We will miss him here at FERC, I wish him and his family the very best for future success – and I am confident he will continue to be successful in whatever career path he chooses.”

Christie further stated, “Willie has been a good friend for whom I have tremendous respect and affection. He is a dedicated and selfless public servant. As I have said many times, he did an outstanding job as Chairman of FERC. He and I collaborated on numerous contentious issues to find common ground and achieve results that serve the public interest.”

Explaining his motivations for resigning, the Democrat expressed, “These complex issues demand bold, innovative solutions, and I look forward to continuing to work on them in the next chapter of my journey.”

In reaction to the retirement, Sen. Joe Manchin (I-WV) stated, “I’d like to thank FERC Commissioner Willie Phillips for his service to our nation. I worked closely with Willie as Chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and I admired his ability to work across party lines to address critical issues facing our nation, including strengthening our power grid to meet our current and future energy needs. Sadly, his departure from FERC is a loss for common sense, responsible government.

Nevertheless, in the comments section beneath his post, users ridiculed the former Democrat, asserting, “Phillips’ exit from FERC is not a loss—it is a long-overdue correction. Bipartisan agreement frequently entails sacrificing America’s energy future for the sake of political theatrics. Although he advocated for transmission reforms, FERC continues to function like an outdated institution, delaying permits for essential infrastructure while foreign adversaries surpass us.”

Furthermore, the same individual remarked, “His resignation paves the way for leadership that emphasizes energy dominance rather than bureaucratic indecision. The true challenge? Appointing a commissioner who will eliminate red tape, expedite nuclear and gas initiatives, and terminate the regulatory stagnation that has rendered our grid vulnerable. Ensuring grid reliability necessitates decisive measures, not perpetual committee discussions.”

Phillips even provoked some liberals, including one Democrat who commented, “You have increased fossil fuel consumption at a time when the world should be transitioning to green energy. The critical threshold is 1.5° C above pre-industrial levels, and currently, it stands at 1.2° C. You have failed to safeguard future generations from climate disaster merely to appease coal and oil interests.”

As stated on his website, “Willie L. Phillips was appointed by President Biden as Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on January 3, 2023. He is currently serving a Commission term that concludes on June 30, 2026.”

Detailing his qualifications, the website noted that Phillips “is a seasoned regulatory attorney with nearly 20 years of legal experience in both public and private sectors. He possesses a comprehensive background in public utility regulation, bulk power system reliability, and corporate governance.
