Losing a parent is never something that anyone wants to go through but it is a fact of life that can hit us hard. Losing anyone that we care about as a matter of fact is a very difficult thing to get over. Whether it’s a family pet, or someone very close to you, the pain is very real and just a part of life. It’s nice to know that somewhere, up in the sky, they are watching over you and making sure that you are on the right path in life. It’s never an easy thing to accept but that’s just part of the journey that we are all going to have to go through in the end. Who can say for certain what awaits us in the future, but it is always comforting to know that somewhere out there, we have an angel watching over every single one of us.

Father and daughter
Peter and his wife Karen were raising their daughter Sue the best that they could. Peter remembers the day that his wife found out that she was pregnant and the celebration that they had afterward. When the pregnancy period was finally over and Sue was brought into the world, it was a great day.

Ever since that day, Peter had been spending a lot of time with his baby daughter. She couldn’t speak, she was still just an infant, but she felt the love of her father. It wasn’t until a few months after she was born that things would take a turn for the worse. Peter was going to have some bad news.
Passing out
While he was at home after work, he was playing with his daughter in the backyard of the family home. When he stood up to go and grab her a toy to play with, he became lightheaded and passed out right there and then. Sue was just a baby, she didn’t understand what was going on.

Only a few minutes later Karen came to the back of the house and saw her husband passed out on the ground. She ran over to see what the problem was. He was waking up and she was slapping him in the face so that he would snap out of it. Eventually, he did, but it wasn’t the end of the drama.
Doctor visit
After Peter woke up in the garden of the house, he was in a haze and didn’t know where he was. His wife told him what had happened and that they should go see a doctor just in case it was something serious. He agreed and made an appointment shortly afterward.

After making the appointment, they went over to their local clinic to take some tests. When it was all said and done they waited in the hallway for the doctor to come out. Sue was there with them, they were planning to go to the park afterward, but it wasn’t going to go down that way.
Bad news
The doctor came out into the hallway with a serious look on his face. He wanted to talk to them right away and told them to come into his office. Both Karen and Peter didn’t like the sound of that at all. This was going to be some bad news, they just had a feeling about it in their gut.

The doctor didn’t waste any time and told them straight away what they had found in their tests. Peter had cancer and it wasn’t looking good for him at all.
The news broke Karen’s heart, Sue was just sitting with them, looking at objects around the office, she didn’t know what was going on.
What now?
Needless to say, their family trip to the park after the doctor’s visit was ruined. They all went back home and Karen couldn’t stop crying. Peter didn’t know how to react to any of this. It seemed like he was going to have to fight this thing, but the odds were really stacked against him.

They had found the cancer in his body much too late to really do anything about it. The doctor gave him a small window of time left and told him that they would do everything in their power to help him. Peter was going to fight this thing, but he was worried about his wife and daughter.
Late nights
Peter would take some therapy for his cancer in the meantime and his body went through a really rough period. He was weak and felt like he weighed a million pounds, although he had lost a lot of weight in reality. He didn’t feel good and he tried to keep hope alive.

But he couldn’t sleep during the night, just thinking about what his wife and daughter would do without him really drove him crazy. He wanted to make sure that they would be alright. On top of that, he wanted to make sure that his daughter would have something to remember him by.
A plan
It hit Peter hard when he had an idea for a plan that he was sure would be great for his daughter. To add, he managed to sell off a lot of his belongings and make some money for his wife to be more secure in the future. He was already thinking ahead, in case the worst happened.

But the plan for his daughter was going to be a big deal. For the next few weeks, he organized a surprise for her and wrote a note for his wife to read. They didn’t know anything about this at the time, but in the near future, it would all become clear to them. Peter had a special gift waiting.
The day comes
Sadly, Peter’s battle with cancer was lost and he passed away one fateful day in the hospital. He had tried his best to beat it, but because they caught it late, there was little hope for them to do much about it. Karen was so upset, she couldn’t stop crying about it.

The funeral was tough for Karen, but she had a lot of family and friends who were around her to help her get through it. Sue was still just a baby who was only now beginning to learn how to speak. Karen would make sure that Sue would remember her father and think about him in a positive way.
The note
But Peter had something to pass on to Karen just before he died. He gave her a piece of paper and told her that he had something planned for Sue. it was to be given to her when she turned eight years old. He felt like at that age she would be able to understand it.

Karen opened up the note and read it, it was instructions for some type of treasure hunt. She promised that when Sue turned eight she would give it to her. Knowing this, it gave Peter a lot of comfort that his daughter would one day remember him in the way he felt was right.
Times goes by
Years had passed since the death of Peter and Karen was looking after her daughter the best way she could. She never got remarried, she was too busy with Sue and working to find someone else. Instead, she found a lot of comfort in knowing that her daughter was a good girl.

Sue was a polite and humble child who loved her mother. She would always ask her to tell her more stories about her father Peter.
She loved hearing about her dad and was always curious to get as much information out of her mother about him as possible. It was always nice to find out something new about him.
Birthday party
Sue’s eighth birthday was coming up soon and Karen had all types of plans about how she could make it the best birthday party ever. She wanted to go big this year and organize a surprise party with all of Sue’s friends. She felt like that would be a great way to celebrate.

So she called up all the people she knew and went to the store to pick out a gift for Sue. She couldn’t believe that it had already been eight years since the day she was born. Karen was just blown away by how time flies by, but then she remembered one more thing.
The map
She remembered that she made a promise to Peter on his deathbed that when Sue turned eight, she would give her his note. Karen couldn’t believe that she had almost forgotten about that. She rummaged through his closet and finally found the note. She had no idea what it was about.

All she knew was what Peter had told her, that it was a surprise for Sue. Karen looked at the old piece of paper and wondered how Sue would react when she got it. She prepared it all for her daughter and waited for that fateful birthday party to arrive. She knew it was going to be life-changing.
It begins
The party had begun and everyone was there to celebrate Sue’s big day. She didn’t know what to expect, but after seeing how happy she was to be with all of her friends, she knew it was going to be a good day for her beloved daughter, full of happiness and love.

As time went on, Sue was running around and playing with all of her friends. Eventually, people went home and it was just Karen and her daughter left in the house. Sue still had one more gift left, and Karen handed her the note that Peter had written for her all those years ago.
Hunting
Sue didn’t know how to react at first. She was touched to find out that her father had left her something from all those years ago. She opened it up and read it out loud. The note was directions for a treasure hunt of some sort. Sue’s eyes widened, she was so excited.

The note also mentioned how much Peter loved her and that he would always be there by her side. It got a few tears out of Sue, but she was so hyped up to do this treasure hunt, that there was no time to cry. She turned over the note and saw the map that was drawn on the back.
First clue
Even Karen looked over at the map with a puzzled look on her face. She had never seen that before, she knew what this was all about, but she had no idea what Peter had in store for them at the end of this hunt. Off Sue went to go and find the first clue, following the map.

The first clue was upstairs in her parent’s bedroom. When Karen heard that she was also very curious. She had no idea that Peter had hidden something in their bedroom. She followed Sue upstairs to see exactly what was waiting for them when they got there. It would be a mystery for sure.
Doorknob?
The map said that somewhere underneath the bed was a box that was waiting for Sue. Karen couldn’t believe it when Sue found it so quickly. She had no idea that box was even there, it was so small in shape and size she had never seen it before. She had cleaned underneath her bed many times before too.

The small box was opened quickly by Sue who couldn’t wait to see what was inside of it. She grabbed the object and showed her mom. It was a doorknob that belonged to some room. But they had no idea where that room was and how to find it in the house.
The missing door
The map would have the answers that they sought, so Sue looked back at the map and read the instructions that were on it. Now it was getting much more challenging for her, there were some poems and words that didn’t make sense on the first reading. She was going to have to think about it.

The instructions were open-ended and needed to be discussed and thought about. When she finally understood what the words meant, Karen gave her daughter a hint at what she thought Peter might have meant.
They went up into the attic of the house, Karen knew what they needed to find.
Construction plans
In the attic of the house, there were plenty of boxes that were filled with all types of things that they had never seen before or hardly ever used. It was a storage space for them, but they hardly ever went up there to get anything. This time though, they had a clear purpose.

Karen and Sue went upstairs and got a box out from the back of the attic. Sue didn’t know what it was at first, but it was actually old construction plans for the house. This home was very old before they bought it and there were plenty of things they didn’t know about the plans.
Hidden room?
When they opened up the construction plans, they found Peter’s signature written on the top of one of the pages. Then they knew that they were on the right path to getting to the next clue. He was with them every step of the way, but what was he trying to show them?

Karen and Sue both looked at the plans for a solid hour or so. They didn’t know what to search for. Then finally, Sue burst out with a surprised yell. She found out that one of the rooms in the plan didn’t match the room in the house. In fact, that meant there was a hidden room behind a wall.
Fake wall
Karen and Sue looked at each other once again in shock, neither of them knew about this hidden wall, but now they were going to get to the bottom of this one way or another. They went to the room that the hidden room was located in. They looked for the wall.

They found the wall and then tapped it, they could hear a hollow sound coming from the other side. In all the years that they had lived in this house, they never knew about this hidden room, Karen guessed that Peter was keeping it as a fun surprise for them to find.
Inside
They searched the wall for anything that would possibly open up the other side. But the wall had been sealed shut, so they were really going to have a tough time opening it. But then Sue noticed something, there was a dresser that was leaning up against the wall and something was behind it.

It was an old dresser that had been there when they moved in and they had never moved it. Maybe behind that was something that would lead them to the next clue? Karen helped Sue push the dresser aside, then they saw the outline of a doorknob. It was the perfect fit.
Mysterious door
Together, Karen helped Sue get the doorknob connected to the hole in the wall that they found behind the dresser. When they turned the knob, they could see that some of the wallpaper was peeling off. Karen didn’t mind though, she wanted to see this other room out of pure curiosity now.

They opened up the hidden door and ripped some of the wallpaper off the wall. A bunch of dust hit them both in the face and they coughed together. Then they covered their mouths and looked inside the very small room. What was inside there and would it be the next clue?
Second clue
The room was small, dark and empty. But in the middle of the floor, there was another small box. This had to be something for Sue, why else would it be here? Sue grabbed it and opened it right away as Karen looked around the small room. She thought it would make a nice closet.

Sue opened up the box and grabbed a little hand-sized shovel. She looked at her mom and she had no idea what that was for. Could it have been for digging something up? If so, then what part of the house were they supposed to dig up now? There was only one place.
Backyard
Karen looked at the map and then tried to figure out what the next clue was all about. Sue looked at the shovel and then took the map to take a peek at what was written. It was another riddle that she needed to figure out. It mentioned something about dirt and Earth.

Sue ran outside to the backyard, this had to be the place that her father was talking about. But where in the backyard did he bury something? Then she saw a drawing of a flower and knew that he was talking about the small garden at the back of the yard.
Digging
Sue used the small shovel to dig around the small garden. She didn’t want to ruin any of the flowers, so she followed the description of one of the flowers that was illustrated on the map. She figured that underneath that flower must be the thing she was looking for without a doubt.

She dug away and surely enough, her tiny shovel hit something. She used her hands to get the object out of the dirt. It was another small box that looked like all of the others. She knew that this had to be it. She had found the next clue, she was so close to the end now.
A key!
Sue opened up the box and looked inside. Then she grabbed a key. She didn’t know what this was about, but then she looked at the map for further instructions.
Apparently, this was a ‘dark key’ used for a space that was described as being underground. What did Peter mean by any of that?

This last clue didn’t make any sense and Sue got frustrated thinking about it. Karen didn’t get it either, this wasn’t as easy as the other clues, they were really going to have to think about this one for a while. It took them a couple of days before they would make any type of breakthrough.
Dead end
It felt like they had hit a dead end with the hunt. Sue had been thinking about this last clue and nothing else. She was going to school and could barely focus on anything else that was going on in her life, she just wanted to find this underground space, wherever it was.

Karen was thinking about it as well, but nothing came to mind. She thought that maybe Peter had made the last clue a little bit too hard for them to figure out. She thought that it would be terrible if Sue never got to the end. That would really break her heart.
Another room?
But then one day after school it hit Sue. She had an idea that maybe there was another clue on the construction plans that she read a little while ago. Maybe there was another space in the house that didn’t exist before or was hidden from them. Sue would find it.

She ran back home, got the construction plans out, and started to look around. She didn’t know what she was searching for at first, but she knew that the answer was here somewhere. Then, she found what she was looking for, it was underneath the house, all the way down in the basement.
Basement
In the basement of the old house that they lived in, there was apparently a hidden space that was in the basement. This was a little creepy, but Sue was so excited that she didn’t think about it at all. She just wanted to get some answers right away, so off she went.

When Karen heard that Sue found another space in the basement, she followed her daughter down there to see what she was talking about. She also just could not believe how many secrets this house held. She had lived here for so many years and still felt like a stranger.
Brick wall
Together they went into the basement and Sue had the map in her hands. She looked around and pointed at the space where there should be a room. But there was an issue, the entire thing was walled with brick. If there was a room there, it would be behind this large wall.

There was just no way that Sue would be able to get through all this brick by herself. It was going to take a team of construction workers to take it down. On top of that, it was dangerous, they had no idea if this was part of the foundation of the house.
No way
Karen felt like they had hit another dead end. This was all fun and games, but there was just no way she was going to knock down an entire wall because of this. She told Sue that she was sorry, but there was nothing they could do. Maybe one day they’d figure it out.

But just when she thought it was all said and done, something happened. Sue looked around the wall and found a brick that was loose. She pulled it out and it fell to the floor. In the hole that the brick left, there was a handle sticking out of it. This was getting crazy.
Entering
Karen was already upstairs in the other part of the house when Sue found the handle and pulled on it to open something. Part of the brick wall opened up. It was like a secret doorway. Sue couldn’t believe it, this was one of the coolest things she had ever seen.

But where was it going? She looked down into the room and it was pitch black. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to go inside all by herself.
But she felt like she had to do it, for her father if not for herself. She took a few slow steps and walked into the darkness.
Dark tunnel
It was so dark inside that Sue thought that this had to be the key that her father was talking about. It was the only explanation for describing it as some sort of ‘dark key’. As Sue walked deeper into the dark, she was shocked to see that there was no end in sight.

Was this some sort of tunnel? It had to be because the walls were next to her and it just led forward. Sue kept going, she was all by herself, but she wasn’t going to stop now. Besides, if she needed help her mom would hear her right away, or so she thought.
A noise
Sue was walking down the tunnel slowly when she heard a noise. It was almost like she wasn’t alone in the tunnel, as if there was someone else inside. It scared her a lot, she screamed and ran out back in the main room in the basement. Then right upstairs to her mom.

She didn’t know where her mom was though, it was like she had just vanished from the house. Sue ran around searching for her mom and calling out her name. She was scared to death that whatever she thought was inside the tunnel had come out and was chasing her around the house.
Scared
After running around and calling for her mom, finally she appeared. She had just gone upstairs to her room for a moment. Sue was hysterical and told her everything that had just happened. Karen didn’t know what to say about it, she needed to go into the basement and check things out.

Together, they both walked down into the basement and looked around. Karen was shocked to see that Sue was telling the truth about there being a mysterious door that led into a tunnel. It was the very last thing that she would think to see down here in this old house.
Courage
Karen wasn’t about to let there be a mysterious door in her house without knowing what was inside. She took Sue’s hand and together they went into the tunnel to confront it. Whatever was inside there, they were going to get to the bottom of it together, as a family.

They walked deeper into the tunnel and they heard that same noise again. It was like something was walking around and scratching along the ground. When they finally got closer to the noise they found out just what it was. It was the last thing they expected to be all the way down here.
Mouse
It was just a mouse! It was a small white mouse that had been down there for who knows how long. The small animal ran into a tiny hole that led into the tunnel when they discovered him. Karen knew this was an old house, but it never ceased to amaze her.

They were about to turn around and walk out, but there was still more to see. The tunnel was almost at the end, there was no way it led to an even larger room. They were going to see what was at the end before they backed out of this and sealed it up.
Final surprise
They reached the end of the tunnel and looked around. They couldn’t really see anything, so they turned the light on Karen’s phone. She looked around the room with Sue, but there was nothing there. When they turned around to leave, Sue accidentally kicked something with her foot and it startled her.

They both looked at each other and then down at the box that was at Sue’s feet. It was just like the box that they had found a few times before. Sue and Karen both knew that this was the final prize and piece of the puzzle. They opened it after they left the tunnel.
Album
They brought the box upstairs and into the living room so they could open it in the sunlight and see what was inside. Sue opened up the box and took a look at what were its contents.
She pulled out a large envelope and inside were photographs and a letter written by Peter.

The letter went on about how much he loved them both and that he hoped Sue was doing well. He was sorry that he wouldn’t be there to watch her grow up, but that he was keeping an eye out for her regardless. He signed the Letter and Sue and Karen looked at the photographs.
Touched
All the photographs were of pictures that they had never seen before. Was Peter with both of them or just with Sue? it was something that he put together to surprise them with. Some old pictures to keep around for memories. Sue and Karen both started to cry at the sight of them.

When it was all said and done, the treasure hunt was really just for a time capsule of photographs that Peter had collected of his family. It was a really nice memory that none of them would ever forget. On top of that, they were able to keep the pictures close to them forever.
