President Donald Trump declared on Sunday that Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY), who has been resisting the White House-supported “Big Beautiful Bill” and other policy objectives of the administration, will face a primary challenger in the lead-up to the 2026 midterm elections.
In an extensive post on Truth Social, Trump highlighted Massie’s opposition to U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities as a recent instance of anti-Trump policy choices. The lawmaker from Kentucky labeled Trump’s actions as “unconstitutional” and reproached Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) for not reconvening Congress to vote on the authorization of military action.
“Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky is not MAGA, despite his claims. In reality, MAGA does not want him, does not know him, and does not hold him in high regard,” the president stated in a harsh post on Sunday.
“He is a detrimental influence who consistently votes ‘NO,’ regardless of how beneficial a proposal may be. He is a simplistic ‘grandstander’ who believes it is politically advantageous for Iran to possess the highest level of nuclear weaponry, while simultaneously shouting ‘DEATH TO AMERICA’ at every opportunity. Iran has killed and injured thousands of Americans and even seized the American Embassy in Tehran during the Carter Administration.”
Trump went on to criticize the congressman for several significant “no” votes on essential Trump policy initiatives, including the “Big Beautiful Bill,” which aims to allocate billions in additional funding for border security, substantially reform the nation’s welfare system, and make tax cuts permanent. Massie has vocally opposed the legislation, contending that it does not adequately cut spending.
“Massie ought to abandon his false pretense and begin prioritizing America, but he lacks the understanding of how to achieve that — he is completely clueless! He will certainly vote against the Great, Big, Beautiful Bill, even though its failure would result in a 68% tax increase for everyone, along with many other dire consequences,” Trump added.

As reported by Axios, Trump’s team has initiated a new political action committee named Kentucky MAGA, with the objective of removing Massie from office in 2026. This committee will be managed by former Trump campaign manager Chris LaCivita and senior White House political advisor Tony Fabrizio.
LaCivita stated that the Super PAC will allocate “whatever it takes” to ensure Massie’s defeat. An unnamed White House aide revealed that the plans for the PAC were already being developed prior to Massie’s announcement regarding his opposition to the strikes on Iran.
Massie, who has been in office since 2012, has successfully navigated primary challenges in the last three election cycles. However, the president’s team feels optimistic after discreetly commissioning an independent poll to assess potential opposition to the Libertarian-leaning lawmaker’s re-election.
The survey, conducted by Trump pollster John McLaughlin, indicated that 52 percent of participants would back a candidate endorsed by Trump, while 23 percent showed support for Massie.
