Signs of deterioration in the public image of Congressman Thomas Massie (R-KY) are becoming increasingly apparent following months of severe criticism from President Donald Trump.
Massie has positioned himself at the forefront of a small faction of staunch fiscal conservatives who are threatening to obstruct Trump’s proposed “big, beautiful” tax cut bill when it returns from Senate revisions for a second vote. His vocal dissent has elicited harsh remarks from Trump, who recently declared his intention to invest significantly in a Republican opponent to unseat Massie in the upcoming primary election next year.
Securing victory in that contest may prove to be less challenging than it initially seemed.
A recent survey conducted by Kaplan Strategies reveals that the six-term legislator is viewed unfavorably by his constituents, the overwhelming majority of whom would prefer a different representative when the 120th Congress convenes in 2027.
When asked if Massie merits reelection, only 19% of respondents concurred, while 47% expressed a willingness to support an opponent. Should Trump endorse that opponent, Massie’s support would plummet to 14%, while the challenger’s backing would increase to 59%.
The sole candidate to announce her candidacy is Nicole Lee Ethington, a registered nurse lacking prior political experience or a history of running for office. Despite her limited name recognition, Ethington would begin with a substantial advantage over Massie, who reported raising $177,394 in just a few days last week.
In a direct comparison poll, Ethington leads Massie 31%-19%. Kaplan observes that Massie’s 19% is identical to the support he would receive against a generic, unnamed opponent, indicating that Ethington has ample opportunity to increase her support if Trump becomes involved in the race.
“Ethington is likely the only candidate with significant potential for growth in support, as her share of the vote is below the total number of voters who indicate they will at least ‘probably’ vote for a challenger to Massie,” the pollsters noted.
Last week, Massie criticized AIPAC, the largest pro-Israel lobbying organization in Washington, D.C., due to his opposition to President Trump’s decision to attack Iran.
“Will lobbyists for a FOREIGN country be able to purchase a seat in Congress? That is the question regarding my re-election. 1,900 of you contributed $177,394 this week to ensure that I can maintain this position to represent American interests, not those of foreign entities,” he stated in a social media post.
The congressman anticipated that Trump’s participation in his re-election campaign would only serve to his advantage.
“The primary effect of Trump engaging on the opposing side of a race typically results in reduced fundraising. In my situation, we are witnessing the contrary effect,” he remarked.
“Most of the individuals contributing to my campaign also support Trump, but they firmly believe that Congress members should be able to vote in favor of their districts rather than acting as a mere rubber stamp for the President or being beholden to foreign interest groups like AIPAC,” he continued, referencing the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.
