The silence that followed was deafening. Finally, Marcus spoke. “Zariah, did you really throw my mother out of Tommy’s party because you were embarrassed by how she looked?”

“She showed up looking like—” Zariah started.

“No,” he said, standing up. “I understand perfectly. Get out.”

“What?”

“Get out of my mother’s apartment. Go home. Pack your things. We’ll discuss custody through lawyers.”

After Zariah left in tears and threats, Marcus collapsed into the chair, his head in his hands. “I’m so sorry, Mom. For everything. For choosing her. For not defending you. For asking you to change.”

“I know,” I said softly.

“What happens to her now?” he asked.

“That depends on her,” I said. “She can choose to learn from this experience and grow. Or she can choose to be bitter and blame everyone else.” I paused. “My guess is she’ll choose the latter.”

“What’s this for?” I asked. “My birthday isn’t until October.”

“I know,” Tommy said. “But I missed your last birthday because Mom said we had to go to her parents’ house instead. So I made you a card for every birthday I missed.”
