These Parents Hid This Secret From Their Kid For Two Years. Today, They Finally Showed Him This…When we bought our house two years ago, The Boy was not quite 2 years old. The room that was to be his had a storage room attached to it, forming a triangular space 7 feet by 12 feet with a small door. We called it “The Secret Room,” but it wasn’t fit for kids—old linoleum floor, wood paneling, exposed insulation. We parked the dresser in front of the door, and The Boy had no idea it existed. We agreed it would make an awesome surprise someday. Sometime after his 3rd birthday, we decided The Secret Room would be his 4th birthday present. Our contractor, Steve, worked on it only when The Boy was at school—rippingout the old stuff, installing drywall, laminate flooring, molding, paint, and a proper light. I decorated with Ikea finds: a table and chairs for crafts, a spice rack for supplies, a world map on the accent wall, a box for dress-up clothes, a rug, and pillows for reading. A lot of people were in on the secret. On his birthday morning, a treasure hunt led him to push the dresser aside. He peeked inside, wide-eyed.
