To provide context, Watson accepted over $1 million in bribes, which included cash, NBA tickets, and a wedding at a country club, in return for granting preferential treatment to specific contractors. This scandal, uncovered following DOGE’s financial audit, has validated MAGA’s criticisms of USAID.
In spite of the evident corruption, Democrats have opposed the agency’s budget cuts of 83%, arguing that such reductions would negatively impact global aid recipients. Both the DOJ and USAID-OIG have reiterated their dedication to fighting fraud, emphasizing that the scheme represented a betrayal of public trust and taxpayer resources, which were significant commitments made during the Trump campaign.
In discussing the matter, Sean Bottary, the Acting Assistant Inspector General for Investigations at USAID, remarked, “Corruption within government programs will not be accepted. Watson exploited his position of trust for personal benefit while federal contractors participated in a pay-to-play scheme.
