WATCH: Fox News Anchor Discovers He Has Cancer Live on Air During Broadcast

In an unexpected moment broadcast live, during a segment of “Good Day Philadelphia,” FOX29 host Mike Jerrick was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, a prevalent and treatable form of skin cancer, by dermatologist Dr. Joanna Walker. While discussing the typical methods for identifying skin cancer, Walker identified a cancerous lesion on Jerrick’s elbow.

Clearly taken aback by the diagnosis, Jerrick remarked that he had noticed the spot but had never considered it could be cancer. He expressed relief at having detected it promptly and looks forward to a swift recovery following a planned surgery.

Upon identifying the basal cell carcinoma, Dr. Walker stated, “It exhibits all the characteristics of the most common type of skin cancer, which is also highly treatable when diagnosed early.” In response to the sudden revelation, Jerrick inquired, “What will you do to it, burn it off?”

Responding calmly, the doctor explained that it must be “cut and stitched, but it is necessary to remove it to prevent it from continuing to grow and overtaking normal skin.” To reassure the host, she mentioned that it is “a very slow-growing type of skin cancer” and is unlikely to metastasize.

Reacting to the unforeseen news, the anchor commented, “I did mention that we should have her bring her [micro]scope because I wanted to examine a few things on my arms, so that part was planned, but I never truly believed it would turn out to be skin cancer.”

Later reflecting on his response, Jerrick shared, “When she announced it, I didn’t feel alarmed or anything; it was just like, ‘Oh wow, I should have done this a long time ago.’ I was more surprised that she said she was going to cut it out instead of burning it off — that’s where I was taken aback.”

Regrettably, this is not Mike Jerrick’s first encounter with the illness, as he had to take several weeks off in 2024 to deal with prostate cancer, leading his community to express their hopes for his quick recovery online. In the comments section of a social media announcement, users expressed their well-wishes for the cherished local newsman. One comment stated, “Thank you, Mike, for sharing and raising awareness! You are in my thoughts and prayers ” Another user remarked, “Oh my, our prayers are with you. Wishing you a swift recovery.”

Expanding on this sentiment, another compassionate social media user wrote, “Many, many prayers @MikeFOX29. I wish you the very best and a quick recovery. Sharing a personal story, one user remarked, “I was unaware of this. I sincerely hope he underwent the removal procedure. My husband had it done in 2004, and a colleague of his, who was in the medical profession, advised him to simply have the prostate taken out. She insisted that he should NOT take chances with radiation. Just eliminate it from your body. He followed her advice, and he is still doing well.” Additionally, providing further support, another comment expressed, “Doc Lee is an excellent individual. He and his team performed the same procedure on me a decade ago. Please convey to Mike my wishes for a swift recovery and a prompt return to work!”
